Refrigerators: A Quick Troubleshooting Guide

East Valley Refrigerator RepairDid you know that modern refrigerators are one of the most reliable major appliances, with an average lifespan of fifteen years? All refrigerators use a cooling system that is filled with a refrigerant gas to absorb and dissipate heat. Since this cooling system is sealed, most repairs will need to be diagnosed by a qualified professional. However, there are many common problems that can be diagnosed and repaired by a do-it-yourselfer.

If your refrigerator seems warm… …check to see if the temperature control knob is set too high.…examine your condenser coils to see if they are dirty, and if so, brush or vacuum them. Condenser coils are found either behind your refrigerator or at floor level.…check to see if the door is closing properly. If not, you may need to adjust the front feet of the refrigerator or check the door seal.
If the refrigerator is running constantly… …take a look for frost buildup, and defrost the refrigerator if needed. Keep in mind that most refrigerators and freezers today are frost-free, and contain automatic heaters to thaw any frost buildup.… it’s possible that the condenser coils need to be cleaned or that the door is not closing properly.
If the interior refrigerator light doesn’t work… …check the bulb and replace it if needed.…test the door switch

In general, regular cleaning is one of the best ways to keep your refrigerator operating at peak efficiency. As a bonus, it will also extend the working life of your refrigerator and reduce energy costs.
